I've seen a few people I know on the internet not quite love this book and it made me sad. Magical realism is such a fantastic underutilized genre. Great review

Also, was the movie Like Water for Chocolate??? We totally studied that in school!

OMG yes hahaha that's the movie! I remember it so distinctly.

I can, in theory, theoretically understand how some people might be put off by One Hundred Years but whenever I see those kinds of reviews or comments I always just want to say try again try again!!!! :)

I'm planning to reread this book this summer as part of a big rereading project I'm doing this year and your review made me excited to dive back in. I read One Hundred Years of Solitude as a teen so I'm guessing I'll have a lot of life experience to bring to my reading this time around.

Omg yes--I can't wait to hear your thoughts the second time around! I read so many intense classics in high school (hello Crime and Punishment as a 16 year old lol) and I love rereading them all and seeing how much deeper I can go now!
